Govt bans “Maalik” three weeks after release
ISLAMABAD: The federal government on Wednesday put a ban on screening of Urdu feature film, "Maalik" across Pakistan, three weeks after its nationwide release.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage, Urdu feature film, "Maalik" has been declared as "uncertified" in the whole of Pakistan with immediate effect.
No reason has been specified for the unusual decision, but the film has been accused by some quarters of promoting ethnic racism and showing politicians in bad light.
The move comes a day after the Sindh Board of Film Censors (SBFC) ordered "Maalik" to be taken off cinemas before revoking the ban hours later.
We believe in freedom of expression & therefor don't encourage bans. However, perversion of Pakistani media w/ ethnic racism is condemnable.— BilawalBhuttoZardari (@BBhuttoZardari) April 27, 2016
